How to add a product in WooCommerce?

WooCommerce Series Part 02

Once you are ready with your WooCommerce platform, Its the time for adding your new Product.

Adding products in WooCommerce is a much simpler task that anyone can do it. These products can be added, deleted and modified at any point of time. To create an order and adding your products in a systematic way, WooCommerce had classified the products in several groups such as Simple, Grouped, External/ Affiliate and variable products.

Apart from these products they also have Virtual and downloadable products in addition which are solely meant for intangible products which don’t require shipping.

Lets add a new product in few simpler steps.

STEP 01

ADDING PRODUCT

To add a product go to PRODUCTS and select ADD NEW on the admin panel.

This is a page that you are already familiar with some additional features required for the products.

Let us start adding your first product with a product TITLE and DESCRIPTION. A description which is given here is the complete guide about your product including its advantages compared to other products.

STEP 2

CHOOSE YOUR PRODUCTS

Below the description box, you can see the options to choose your product type depending on what you are selling.

WooCommerce offer you 6 basic types of products. Lets get familiar with each one of them.

SIMPLE PRODUCT

Its the default one which has been set by the WooCommerce. Its the most common and easily understandable product type in the WooCommerce. It’s a stand-alone one that you have to ship and doesn’t have any variations.

Eg: Books, Hats etc…

GROUPED PRODUCTS

Its a collection of related products which can be purchased individually. Its a combination of simple products. A grouped products won’t have a price or other entity, It will be dependent on the individual simple product.

Eg: A set of 3 plates

EXTERNAL/ AFFILIATED PRODUCTS

External products are those products which are not hosted on your site. Eventhough products are added via WooCommerce, its sold elsewhere. Its an extra income method for you. One can share their link to an affiliate store to sell the product there. Customers who wish to buy those product will be redirected to the URL that you specify in the product settings. Each product have different SKU, Price, Stock option etc…..

VARIABLE PRODUCTS

This product type helps you to add multiple variations to your product and create a complex product such as products in different colour, size etc..

Eg: T shirts with different sizes and colours.

VIRTUAL PRODUCTS

Virtual products are intangible products which doesn’t have a physical entity and for this reason it doesn’t require shipping. Its a simple and straightforward process. You dont have to worry about maintaining the inventory or running out of stock with this digital products as you are selling the same products again and again.

Eg: A service

DOWNLOADABLE PRODUCTS

Similar to virtual products, Downloadable products also doesnt require shipping. This will provide additional fields where you can provide a downloadable file. After the purchase customers are given a downloadable file via link in the notification email.

This is perfect when you are selling E-books, Music or any other product that involves only a file download.

Once you have decided the product type you have required select that particular one from the PRODUCT DATA dropdown box.

Here I am choosing a simple product . Its the basic one and its steps are common for every other products though they have slight variations depending on its features.

STEP 3

PRODUCT META BOX

Product data meta box is where the majority of important data is added for your products. These may change according to the product type you choose.

GENERAL TAB

Here you can set the price details for your product. There are two fields where you can update the details. Regular price and Sale price.

Regular Price – Its the actual price of your product.

Sale Price – This is the price that you are selling your products. It can be a discountable price or Shoppers can see your actual price and sale price.

INVENTORY TAB

This enables you to sell products and allow customers to add them to cart to buy. Inventory tab helps you to manage stock effectively. By default there will be SKU, stock status and other options available.

If it’s not available you can go to WOOCOMMERCE – SETTINGS – PRODUCTS – INVENTORY and make it displayed.

SKU or Stock Keeping Unit – Its a unique identification code for each product which can be used to Track. This helps to simplify inventory management. You can use a WordPress plugin to assign it or can enter manually.

Manage Stock – Below the SKU you can see a checkbox named “Enable stock management at product level” when you select that, Stock management will automatically update you the stock status, otherwise you will have to update the stock manually.

When you enable the Stock management at the product level, More options will be available. Otherwise only Stock Status option will be available for you.

Stock Status– You can use this field to define whether a product in stock or out of stock without worrying about the actual stock levels.

Enable Manage Stock.

The first option available here is Stock Quantity – Here you can enter the number of pieces available in stock so that it will auto update .

Allow backorders – You can allow backorders if you need it so that the customers can still purchase the product even if it’s out of stock. You will supply the order as soon as it’s available. If you dont allow it, It will be showing as out of stock for the customers.

Low stock Threshold – This will notify you when the stock of the product goes below the threshold. You can enter a number upon which you will be notified. You will receive an email.

Sold individually – You can check this box if you want to limit the product to one per single order.

SHIPPING

Here you can add physical characteristics of your product such as weight and dimensions. Weight includes the item weight and Dimensions includes the height, length and width of an item. Add it carefully so that the customers shouldn’t face any issues.

Below that there is an option called shipping class. The shipping class, group the products based on the weight limits. You can select one shipping class If you have created one.

LINKED PRODUCTS

Here you will get an option to either upsell or cross sell your products. These are the products that you may wish to encourage users to upgrade based on the product they are currently viewing. It encourages the customers to buy more products or buy other expensive product that you have recommended via upsell and cross sell.

Upsell – It means you are recommending an alternative product to the current product. It can be similar product to that of the product viewed by the customer or can be a expensive one compared to the previous one with more features and better options.

Eg: When you are purchasing a phone, upsell will recommend you a more pricier one with more memory and features.

Cross sell – These are the products which compliments another product that are displayed with the cart and related to the users cart contents.

Eg: Phone cases are recommended for your new phone in cross sell. Mostly seen in cart while checking out.

ATTRIBUTES TAB

In this tab you can set things like colour,size etc.. for your product. They are the best way for grouping the products. Each attributes will have its own terms. For example size attributes have Large, Small, Medium etc.. These can be used to filter the products in the frontend. Attributes and variations go hand in hand. If its a simple product, the attributes are just for providing some extra information about the product.

Custom product attribute – If you have already created an attribute you can choose that or can create a new one with custom product attribute that will be unique for the product by just clicking on ADD option near custom product attribute. A new section will appear. You can give a name and certain terms that will apply to this product. You can also manage the visibility of this on the frontend by just deselecting the box named “visible on the product page”.

ADVANCED TAB

This tab helps you to add the purchase note for the customers once they have completed their purchase. If you are using custom ordering for your products in the shop you can define a menu position for the product here. If you want to allow customer reviews, You can enable it here.

STEP 4

SHORT DESCRIPTION

Once you are ready with your product data meta box, Its time to add a catching short description for your product. The short description appears on the prominent spot which is next to the product main image. Long description, the one we have created at first appears further down. It can also depend on the theme you choose. Keep your description short with maximum 2-3 sentences with important catching words.

STEP 5

ADDITIONAL TOUCHES

PRODUCT CATEGORY

on the left side of the page, you can see the option for adding categories and sub-categories for your product. It will help you to keep an order for your products. It’s same as giving categories for your posts and pages in WordPress which can be edited at any point of time.

Eg: Category trousers can be divided into sub-categories formal, casual etc..

PRODUCT TAGS

Tags are used for linking the products across categories.

While we move on to Publish button, you can see different options available to modify your products.

Below that you can add images for your product.

PRODUCT IMAGES

This is the main image of the product. Largest image on the product page.

PRODUCT GALLERY

This is the extra images added to the product that will appear on the gallery.

CATALOG VISIBILITY

This option helps you in determining the visibility of your product. Where the product should appear, either in shops, in search, archives or hidden.

Below that you can see a checkbox named featured product. By allowing it, you can define the product as a featured image.

DUPLICATING A PRODUCT

If you want to add a new product, there will be a need for adding a lot of information repeatedly. You can use the duplicate option for making the task much easier, so you don’t need to add everything. You just need to make some modification for that particular product type.

For that just click on the COPY TO A NEW DRAFT near publish button.

STEP 5

PUBLISH

Once you are done with your new product, Just click on publish button for publishing the product.
